The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (2015) is sequel to the first movie which came out in 2012. The scenes are familiar with the same rundown hotel in Jaipur, India, for semi-retirement Brits who are not quite done with living yet. In the second episode, the pensioners in the hotel have settled down and take morning roll calls to indicate that they are still living.
Those of us who enjoyed the first movie can hardly wait to see the sequel. The star studded cast has its usual suspects: Judi Dench, Maggie Smith, Dev Patel, Richard Gere and Bill Nighy. The dusty streets of India with its old cars and hustle and bustle of the street life are a sight to behold! What is most likable about the Second Best Marigold Hotel is Tennyson’s poems as lovingly recited by Bill Nighy.
Maggie Smith stole the show with her no nonsense direct approach in life and business. Not to mention that the loud and agitated acting style of Dev Patel has its limits. The loud Bollywood music, dancing and fireworks are overwhelmingly compared to the quiet lives of the pensioners at the The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel.
The movie is played out on several human levels that include spiritual, religious, sexual, death, fear of commitment, alcohol, marriage, violence, intimacy, and living in a different culture.
A memorial quote from Sonny: “Everything will be alright in the end, and if it’s not alright, it’s not the end.”
If you haven’t seen the movie yet, it is worth watching it for yourself and be a judge of what you think of the movie.
Now, I have to go and catch up on Tennyson’s poems.
