Why do we observe National Senior Citizens Day? Who is considered a senior citizen? The numbers vary from one company to another. Companies such as AARP give senior citizens discounts for hotels and car rentals. Movie theaters give discounts if you are 62, and United Airlines consider you eligible for senior discounts if you are 65 years old.
Fannypants wants to recognize contributions made by senior citizens in their communities throughout the United States. This is a time to pay tribute for the contributions seniors make to their families, communities, workplace and their country.
Just to name a few famous senior citizens:
1. Eleanor Roosevelt (1884-1962) began her career as First Lady of the United States at age 40 and subsequently became ambassador to the United Nations under President Truman where she pushed through “The Universal Declaration of Human Rights,” and was President Kennedy’s chair of the Presidential Commission on the Status of Women.
2. Roland Hayes (1887-1977) was an American lyric tenor and composer, also considered the first African-American male concert artist for his black spirituals and his classical repertoire in French, German, and Italian songs.
3. Mrs. L Diercks who was given special mention at the U.S. Army War College graduation, Carlisle, PA. One of her elementary school students graduated from the War College and was invited by her student to attend his graduation. The master of ceremonies cannot remember when he had seen an elementary school teacher attending a student’s graduation. To Mrs. Diercks, we pay tribute to her work as a school teacher.
